The introduction of Multipartism in Tanzania in 1992 requires the Registrar of Political Parties to facilitate registration of Political Parties and monitor their day to day operations.

The Registrar of Political Parties came into force through Act No.5 of 1992 under Section 4(1). The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is an independent government Institution under the auspicious of the Prime Minister’s Office, whose main objective is to institutionalize, nurture and enhance multiparty democracy through monitoring and proper implementation of Political Parties Act 1992 and the election expenses Act 2010, as well as other related laws, rules and regulations.

The Registrar of Political Parties is a chief executive Officer of the Office of Registrar of Political Parties who is appointed by the President. Section 4(4) of the Act gives the Registrar of Political Parties the mandate to Register Political Parties.

Furthermore Section 9(1) of the Act, gives the Registrar mandate of de-registering any political party which contravenes the provisions of the Act.
